Where to find a calendar's iCal link

How to find the subscription link on a school, club, or organization's calendar page, and paste it in.

Most organizations that publish a calendar online also publish a subscription link, sometimes called an iCal, ICS, or webcal link. It's the address your phone's calendar app would use to subscribe, and it's what CheckTheCal checks.

  1. Open the organization's calendar page in your browser: the school's events page, the club's fixtures page, the venue's "What's on".
  2. Look for a button or icon labelled Subscribe, Add to calendar, iCal, ICS, Sync, or Export. It's often a small calendar icon, or a "feed" or broadcast icon, near the top or bottom of the calendar.
  3. If you're offered a choice of apps (Apple, Google, Outlook), look for an option such as Copy link, iCal feed, or Other. You want the address itself, not a download of one event.
  4. Copy the link. It usually ends in .ics, or starts with webcal://. Either kind works.

Tip: On many sites, right-clicking the Subscribe or iCal button and choosing Copy link address gives you exactly the link you need.

Paste it into CheckTheCal

  1. Go to Add a Calendar.
  2. Paste the link into Calendar feed URL and choose Check this URL.
  3. Check the preview: the number of events and the next event should look like the calendar you meant.
  • "That doesn't look like a calendar": the link probably points to the web page rather than the feed. Go back and look for the subscribe or iCal option again.
  • A single event downloaded: that's an "add this one event" link. Look for the link for the whole calendar instead.
  • The site is blocking automated visitors: some sites turn away anything that isn't a person using a browser. We'll tell you if that's what happened, and you can ask us to email you when it's unblocked.
