Slack

Post every calendar change into a Slack channel.

CheckTheCal can post each change into a Slack channel, alongside or instead of email. It's handy for a coaching team, a school office, or a family workspace. Slack posts never count toward your monthly email allowance.

Slack is part of the Pro and Business plans.

1. Create an incoming webhook in Slack

Slack calls the link we post to an incoming webhook. You create it once, for the channel you want.

  1. Go to api.slack.com/apps and sign in to your workspace.
  2. Choose Create New App, then From scratch. Give it a name such as "CheckTheCal" and pick your workspace.
  3. In the app's settings, open Incoming Webhooks and switch it on.
  4. Choose Add New Webhook to Workspace, pick the channel, and choose Allow.
  5. Copy the Webhook URL. It starts with https://hooks.slack.com/.

If your workspace needs an admin's approval for new apps, Slack will ask them for you.

2. Add it to CheckTheCal

  1. Open the calendar you want to post, and go to its Webhooks tab.
  2. Choose Slack as the type, paste the https://hooks.slack.com/… URL, and save.
  3. Choose Send a test. A sample message should appear in the channel within a few seconds.

To post several calendars to the same channel, add the same Slack URL on each calendar.

What the messages look like

Each check that finds changes posts one message: the calendar's name, then the added, changed, and cancelled events in the same groups as the email, with before and after values for anything that moved. A link takes you to the calendar's page. If we can't reach a calendar, we post that too.

Pausing or removing it

On the Webhooks tab you can Pause the Slack endpoint, or Remove it. If Slack keeps refusing our posts, for example because the webhook was removed on Slack's side, we turn the endpoint off and email you. It shows Turned off after failures until you choose Switch on.
